A function generator for converting polar coordinates into rectangular coordinates, has the input variable subjected to two parallel transformations (1, 2) one (1) being nonlinear, but symmetrical about the zero point, and rising and falling with its slope decreasing from zero on. The other transformation (2) is linear. The output variable is made sinusoidal by subtraction or addition (3) of the two intermediate variables obtained by the above transformations.
