Antilipaemic compsn. for oral administration comprises as active ingredient =1 poly(acidic amino acid) (I) of mol. wt. 10,000-100,000 or its pharmaceutically acceptable salts, and an adjuvant. (I) may be a homo- or copolymer, pref. of mol. wt. 30000-90000, and is formulated as a tablet or pill. (I) Reduced the blood level of total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, beta-lipoproteins etc. Unlike heparin and dextrian sulphate they have no anticoagulant side effect; are of low toxicity (LD50(p.o. rats) for polyglutamic acid is 6g/kg) and can safely be given for prolonged periods. Pref. (I) are homo- or copolymers of glutamic, aspartic and cysteic acids. Suitable granules comprise 200mg polyglutamic acid or its Na sa 290mg. lactose; 500mg maize starch and 10mg hydroxypropyl cellulose.
