A spherical pressure vessel (1) for explosive forming of materials, has a circular opening in its lower surface to receive a circular work table (3). The work table is raised by a jack (15) so that an air-tight seal is formed by the flange at the base of the table (3). The material (6) to be worked is placed on the work table (3) and covered with the explosive (7). The explosive is fired by the capsule (13) which is ignited by the electrodes (9, 10). In order to ensure an air-tight seal between work table (3) and chamber (1) the angle of the wall of the chamber in the region of the table (3) is the angle of friction for the materials of wall and table.
