An automatic indication of the speed of conduction along a nerve, as well as of the latent time, is obtained from an electronic interpretation of the EMG response signal. If the attempt at making the desired measurement does not succeed, the electronic interpretation is to provide a guide to the necessary corrective action. The electronic interpretation preferably indicates any manual operations required, or makes the necessary corrections automatically; preferably again, the electronic interpretation leads to repeated attempts at a successful measurement.
