An insulating or quilting material e.g. for quilts, eiderdowns, mattresses, sleeping bags and clothing, consists of a synthetic material core enclosed between layers of bulk material, such as feathers, down, or other substances based on animals or plants. The whole is enclosed in an outer layer. The core has a high bulk elasticity and air content. The outer materials are hygroscopic, and easily give up moisture. The core can be made of compacted or noncompacted fleece or flocked textile materials, or can be a mixture of organic and inorganic fibres. It may also be enclosed by an intermediate wide mesh. The material can be sewn to give a quilted pattern. The synthetic material can form 30-70 wt.% of the total. It is attached by an electrostatic charge, and may be erected to increase the charge.
