Monomethylol imidazole derivs. - useful as curing agents for epoxides, dyeing aids, for polymers formaldehyde resin additives and starting materials for ion exchange resins
New monomethylolimidazole derivs. are of formula (I): R is 1-4C alkyl or benzyl. R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl. When R1 is H R1 is 2-4C alkyl. They are prepd. by reacting the corresp. non-hydroxymethyl substd. cpd. with at least an equimolar amt. pref. 1.5 mole/mole of formaldehyde, in a reaction medium of pH is not 7, pref. 7-13. The reaction is pref. carried out at 40-200 degrees C. Pref. a catalyst (II) is used, selected from hydroxides or carbonates of Li, Na, K, Ca, Br, or quat. ammonium hydroxides, tert. amines or alkali metal salts of imidazoles. Pref. is not 0.5 eq. (II) is used per mole (I).
