Pocket camera with integral flash - has close-up mode using modulating gray filter to scatter light and supplementary lens

The compact camera has a retractable electronic flash unit (2) with a switch (9) which couples the flash to the power supply when pulled out. When the flash is to be used for close subjects it is slid into the camera housing under a gray filter (8) to scatter and reduce the light output, and is coupled to the shutter release by a close-up selector switch (7). The latter (7) also moves a close-up lens (7a) in front of the standard lens. The gray filter can be wedge-shaped to aid the light scattering and to avoid the 'red eye' effect. When closed up the electronic flash is inhibited unless the close-up mode is set.
