Machine has a stack support which can be raised and lowered, a table on which the sheets are deposited, and a truck with clamping strips travelling between support and table. Near the edge of the support is a suction beam with strip, tilting about its axis. The beam (7) tilts between one position with the suction strip (8) lowermost and a second one with it towards the truck (4), simultaneously moving to and fro and up and down. A manipulating stirrup (9) encloses and is clear of the beam, tilting on the beam axis (6), and moving with the beam. The edge of the sheet taken up by the beam suction strip from the stack (13) is first rolled up as the beam moves in one direction, after which it is taken over by the stirrup, onto which it is deposited by movement of the beam in the opposite direction.
