The single-blade (4) centrifugal pump is particularly intended for handling effluent. It has axial inlet and radial outlet (2) and the blade entry edge (5) is at a shorter radial distance from the impeller (3) centre (6) than the exit (10). The blade is curved as part of a cylinder mantle with radius (r) over a large angle (gamma) from the entry (5), and subsequently over a small second angle (delta) to the exit (10), the remaining angle (epsilon) being open. The first angle (gamma) may be at least 180 deg. The third angle (epsilon) may be such that the cross-sectional outlet area at least equals that of the central pump inlet. The blade portion extending over the angle (delta) may be formed by a pivoted (7) flap (9) which may be adjustable from outside the pump housing (1).
