The clamping chuck for lathes has an axially moving piston for chuck clamping and releasing. The clamping jaws for the workpiece can be moved by a manually operated chuck key. The low moment of inertia of the chuck makes it suitable for high rotational for high rotational speeds. The manually operated carrier (28) is formed as a slider moving transverse to the driving (16) and clamping jaws (22) in a radial plane of the chuck body (10). This carrier is connected with the clamping jaw (22) in the coupling position by teeth (23). The actuating slider (28) has teeth (46) on its back side and the driving jaw (16) has a radial bore (44) into which a chuck key may be pushed to engage with these teeth.
