Shaft furnace is used esp. for roasting lime via solid-, liq., and/or gaseous- fuels; and has a preheating zone, roasting zone (I), and cooling zone. Zone (I) has a vertical row of recesses fitted with burners and forming combustion chambers; and this zone (I) also contains a vertical row of bridges, which form baffles directing the flow of the charge. Each bridge has a triangular cross-section tapering upwards into more combustion chambers located under each bridge. The cooling shaft has a vertical dividing wall forming two shafts, each with its own outlet for the roasted lime. Another bridge is pref. located near the bottom end of the preheating zone. Kiln is similar to that described in 2513634, but is more suitable for producing roast lime of different quality e.g. for building materials or for fertilisers.
