A bag is formed with a sealed bottom and open top and suspended by the VFFS machine; the suspended bag is filled through its opened top with particulate material to near a predetermined weight; the suspended bag and its contents are weighed as filling continues; filling of the bag is terminated in response to reaching the predetermined net weight; and the top of the bag is sealed. The appts. may comprise a suspension assembly, including a forming head, for forming a bag and vertically suspending it therefrom. Weighing appts., which may include load cells, is attached to the suspension assembly for indicating the net weight of particulate materials being dispensed to the bag. Control devices are provided and connected to a filling auger and the weighing assembly for arresting operating of the filling auger in response to indication from the weighing assembly that the bag has been filled to its predetermined net weight.
