Pulverised coal igniter system - has electric arc heated high velocity gas jet directed into coal-air stream for spontaneous combustion

The method is carried out by directing an electric arc heated high velocity igniter gas jet into contact with the pulverized coal-air stream until ignition occurs through spontaneous combustion. Optionally the igniter gas jet is maintained in contact with the pulverized coal-air stream in order to stabilise the coal-air flame and prevent it from being extinguished. The apparatus comprises a combustion chamber, a supply system continuously passing the pulverized coal-air stream into the combustion chamber. An electric arc heating device produces a hot high velocity igniter gas jet for igniting the pulverized coal in the combustion chamber. The electric arc heating device is vortex stabilized.
