The coupling comprising steel plates (1, 1a) has a set of permanent magnets on at least one plate. These magnets are subdivided into a large number of poles (2, 2a, 3, 3a). The magnet distribution on the two plates is not necessarily identical. In order to assist in damping torsional oscillations the coupling also has components necessary for eddy current and/or hysteresis torque transmission. For examples one plate (1a) may have a copper facing annulus (D2-d1) to give eddy current coupling.
