Sepn. centrifuge is used for biological specimens, such as blood, esp. to recover plasma after the plasma phoresis process. The centrifuge has a rotor with holders attached to it which can swing about a pivot on horizontal axis from the vertical rotor axis. These normally hang in the vertical plane but swing out as velocity builds up. The angle of tilt the vertical is limited to 30-60, pref. 45 degrees. There are two such holders, one on either side of the rotor. The design allows a smaller design of housing and bowl a shorter run up time, reduced vibrational moment on the machine, low, total wt. for the machine which is thus more easily portable and can be used in mobile blood donor centres, even on aircraft.
