The diesel engine has a main combustion chamber, to which an auxiliary chamber is connected by a narrow overflow passage. The volume of the auxiliary chamber is a small fraction of the main one, and part of the fuel is injected into it from the nozzle, which discharges into the main chamber. There are one or more such auxiliary chambers (6) their total volume amounting to no more than 2 1/2% of the compression volume. Their throttle opening (8) are preferably struck by a fuel jet under operating conditions where air movement is weak e.g. when running at low speeds and loads.
