The paper cutting machine has a press beam, acting as tool carrier, driven by a hydraulic piston/cylinder unit via a pump. A return spring arrangement is positioned near transmission rods, which are tensioned, when the beam moves to a working table. The spring arrangement (18) has extremely low spring characteristics, and is adjusted to the press beam (2) for weight compensation, the hydraulic circuit has a dual path arrangement to feed the piston/cylinder unit (16). One path contains a return throttle while the second path provides direct feed of the pump pressure into the cylinder of the unit. Both parts may be selectively switched on. The first path may contain a temperature-dependant element to control a passage.
