Container trailer for lorry - has single axle positioned behind lorry rear axle to spread loading on road surface

The container lorry has a single rear axle while the container load is fitted to a separate support frame (15) with a second axle(11) at one end and reacting struts (15) at the other. When the lorry is backed under the container the support frame fits over the chassis and the vehicle becomes a twin rear axled type for increased load capacity. The removable section has its axle on pneumatic adjusters so that it can raise the load on the struts and allow the lorry to drive away from underneath. The unloaded lorry, with its single rear axle, is lighter and has less tyre wear.
