Appts. for obtaining a controlled nuclear fusion reaction with a positive energy balance operates by magnetic containment and compression of a plasma. Annular reaction vessel has an excitation winding in which the turns run parallel to the vessel wall and concentrically around the principal axis of the vessel; the turns are arranged both on the outer and on the inner face of the vessel and are energised in such a way that the direction of the magnetic flux produced by both sets of turns along the principal axis of the vessel is the same. Magnetic compression forces do not tend towards zero even towards the end of the compression stage, because the degree of magnetic coupling between the primary winding and the sec. "winding" or stream of plasma tends towards a finite value. Thus the plasma is maintained enclosed and in a stable position.
