An electro-optical distance measurement system, in partic. a laser distance measurement system, has an optical transmitter and an optoelectrical receiver. It gives good close range performance and requires no narrow bandwidth optical filter for background suppression. The transmitter is a carbon dioxide waveguide pulsed laser. A superposition receiver detects the laser beam reflected from the measurement object. The transmitter contains an oscillator for the transfer signal and an amplifier amplifying the oscillator continuous wave signal to produce a pulse for transmission.
