The generator converts each NRZ pulse into a bipolar pulse always having a positive leading pulse and a negative trailing pulse. The bipolar pulse has no d.c. component. The clock rate is independent of the data pulses and can be constantly present at the generator. This allows even infrequent data pulses to be converted reliably. Input data is passed through two series connected D-flipflops receiving inverted and non-inverted clock pulses respectively. The outputs of the first and second flipflops are gated through by non-inverted and inverted clock pulses respectively to the inputs of a push-pull amplifier.
