Catalysts for purifying liq. and gaseous industrial mixts. contg. mercaptane, have the formula LxL'X', MyM'y', (CO)z in which x=0-4; x'=0-4; y=0-4; y'=0 or 1; z=1-14; if x=0, x'=1-3; if y=0, y'=1; M is Fe; M' is a gp. VI, VII or VIII metal; L is a monomer mol. or a unit of a polymer chain contg. =1 structural unit capable of coordination with methylcarbonyl fragments, comprising C=C, C=N-, -S-N left arrow or right arrow P; L' is cyclopentadienyl or a unit of a polymer chain contg. cyclopentadienyl; and if x=0, L' is a unit of a polymer chain contg. cyclopentadienyl. The catalysts are useful for treatment of petrochemical streams and mercaptan-contg. gases and solns. by converting aggressive mercaptans into inactive disulphides. Typical catalysts are cyclohexadieneirontricarbonyl C6H8-Fe(CO)3 (I) bis(acetonitrile)-pi-allylmolybdenumdicarbonyl-chloride (CH3CN)2Mo(C3H5)(CO)2Cl, etc.
