The abseil equipment has a device producing a braking action supplementary to that produced by the user-operated handle. The belay rope (2a) is coiled on onto a reel (2) rotatingly fitted on an axle (3). The axle has a threaded stub (3a) operating in a corresponding nut welded to the stirrup-shaped frame (1). The other end of the axle has a square stub section on which the handle (4) is fitted. The roping down speed is controlled by the handle (4). The clockwise turning of which contracts the parallel legs of the stirrup, producing braking by friction between leaf springs (3b) and sides of the reel.
