An increase in the data content of digital transmissions from analogue to digital converters coupled to measuring transducers, is obtained by separation into a coarse and fine component. The digitised measured parameter is of 12 bits length (MW) and is stored in such a way that the least significant bits are zero. The remaining bits (GR) form a coarse component that is checked against the stored value. If the difference is below a specified value the fine component is considered (FE). An eighth bit distinguishes the two groups.
