The lateral-duct compressor or vacuum pump comprises an electric drive motor (1) whose drive shaft (6) extends into the compressor housing (2) and carries the impeller (7) at its end. Between the motor and the impeller, the shaft carries a cooling fan impeller (3). The housing may have a cowl (5) with a constant spacing from the housing wall to form an air guide duct to the fan. The compressor housing may have external cooling fins, and the fan impeller may be made of light metal with good heat conducting characteristics.
