Increasing the water-solubility of basic ferric sulphate (I) obtd. by oxidn. of solid ferrous sulphate (II) contg. water of crystallisation is effected by mixing the scarcely water-soluble (I) with dil. (20-40%) H2SO4 in the molar ratio 2 Fe(OH)SO4:0.3-0.7 H2SO4 and with recycled soluble (I) at a temp. between 15 and 80 degrees C and then allowing to solidify by storage. The solubilised (I), which is hydrated and has a molar ratio of 1 Fe2O3: 2.3-2.7 SO3 and gives under 2 (under 1) wt.% insol. residue, is useful as a flocculant for sewage. The process is esp. economical if waste H2SO4 esp. contg. Fe (from TiO2 mfr.) is employed.
