A flywheel (1) is enclosed in a protective housing (2), the inner circumference of which is covered with a honeycomb structure, the walls of whose cells lie in a radial sense. The cells are closed by a plate over their inner ends and interconnected by hones in their wal walls. They are filled with a fluid having a high talent heat. On the catastrophic failure of the flywheel, the shock is absorbed by plastic deformation of the honeycomb and by change of state of the fluid, caused by heating induced by friction.
