Abrasive material with metallic binder for cutting tools - esp. diamond powder moulded with binder contg. gallium, nickel, and tin, and producing exceptionally high cutting speeds

The binder contains Ga, together with (I) one or more of the metals Cu, Ni, Cr, Co; and (II) one or more metals which lower the m.pt. of gallium. Metals (II) are pref. tin and/or indium. The pref. abrasive material contains by wt. 70-95% metallic binder and 5-30% abrasive, which is esp. diamond powder. A pref. compsn. for the metallic binder is 32-75% Ga, 25-68% of metals (I), and 20% max. of metals (II), viz. Sn and/or In. The esp. pref. compsn. for the binder is (III) 57% Ga, 33% Ni, 10% Sn. Although the pref. abrasive is diamond powder, similar good results were obtd. when using cubic boron nitride or other hard materials instead of diamond. Used in mfr. of tools for cutting, grinding and honing, where a grinding performance of 2000 mm3/minute can be achieved.
