Knock=out and cooling of castings in sand moulds - where wt. of castings in binary coded moulding boxes is used with computer to adjust vol. of cooling water fed into knock=out drum
Moulding boxes are fed successively through a moulding station a first weighing station, a casting station a cooling track, a second weighing station, and a knock-out and cooling station. The difference between the wt. of the filled mould and the emply moulds is employed to adjust the amt of cooling water fed onto the sand moulds in the cooling station so that both the castings and the sand are at a desired temp. on leaving the station. The pref. plant uses moulding boxes with coding pegs and the weighing stations are fitted with proximity initiators using a binary decimal code and feeding signals to a computer controlling the water spraying into a rotary knock-out drum. The two weighing stations, pref. use load cells to obtain the wt. of the moulds. Despite sudden variations in the size and type of castings being made, i.e. necessitating the use of different moulding boxes, the exact amt. of water can always be added in the cooling station.
