An alarm system provides for multichannel monitoring of a range of sensors. The sensors are used for fire smoke or intruder detection. The system allows for cycle variations to be programmed. Each of the channels (51, 52) are optically isolated from each other and have alarm and sabotage output lines (70, 71). Input lines (57, 58) are coupled to a frequency divider (59) connected to voltage comparators (60, 61). Coupled logic stages (75, 76, 67, 64, 66, 65, 69) process the generated outputs over relays that are programme controlled.
