The semiconductor switch consists of a first transistor (2) in series with a thyristor (1). A third transistor (3) in series with a power source (4) is connected across the thyristor. Both transistors and the thyristor have the same conduction direction. The advantage of the switch lies in its needing no special commutating devices, in having a very low control power consumption, in having a simple control circuit, and in having its thyristor adequately protected against overcurrents without needing fuses or short-circuiting devices. The switch is switched on by first turning on the first transistor (2) and then supplying a current to the thyristor's gate. The thyristor is switched off by the second transistor (3) in series with the power source.
