A spherical housing, with tubular extensions such as the rear axle housing of a rod vehicle, is forged from a thick walled tube. The tube is held is held on a mandrel between an upper and lower die with spherical recesses. The mandrel has a lateral projection with a spherical contour and is supported in two bearings mounted on hydraulic jacks. As the dies are moved towards each other, the mandrel is pushed upwards and then rotated through a small angle between successive movements of the dies to produce a spherical middle portion in the tube.
