A printer with a text processor and store and a display for defined characters or functions employs a method and device which facilitates location of written text locations in office application, i.e. for typewriters. It also enables simple location of gaps printed as tabs or spaces. A visual display (15) of type characters (109) corresp. to the type set being used is coupled to the type roller (5). A monitor key (19) activated by pressing one of the keys (20-23) moving the carriage causes characters or functions held in the text store to be accessed. The corresp. visual type characters is displayed by positioning the type roller accordingly w.r.t. an indicator position (12, 13, 16). Operating conditions represented by more than one character are displayed by the corresp. characters being alternately shown.
