Red phosphor, esp. for colour TV screens, has pigment particles (I) with red body colour adhering to the surface of the phosphor particles (II), (I) consisting of Fe oxide particles. Pref. (I) can be formed on and/or bonded to (II). (II) are based on lanthanide oxide or oxysulphide e.g. Y2O3:Eu or Y2(O, S)3:Eu. (I) are formed by the thermal decomposition of Fe formate, oxalate, acetate, tartrate etc., esp. Fe acetylacetonate at 200-1000 (700) degrees C. (I) have high transparency, leading to a high light yield, and high resistance to mechanical handling and adhere well to the surface of (II).
