The typing mechanism has a punch which, when released, presses a paper sheet against individual characters forming letters, numbers or symbols. The characters are embossed on a support (41) independent of the mechanism, and on which the latter is placed so as to bring the punch (2) above a selected character. The punch can work in a guide (3) having a spring (4) compressed by sliding the guide. When the latter has moved for a predetermined stroke a release mechanism (5, 6, 7) frees the spring, which then thrusts the punch against the paper (9).
