Conc. municipal clarifying sludge, mixed with a C-carrier to form a mixt. having C/N ratio 25-30, is charged to a closed composting tank and aerated forcedly until decayd. The compost obtd., which contains (a) Actinomycetes bacteria, Eubacteria and Myxobacteria, (b) fungi of Myxomycetes-, Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes- and Basidiomycetes species, (c) active ingredients, such as vitamins, antibiotics, humic acids, fulvic acids and humins, has a granulat to fine-grained structure, also contains 20 vol.% water, and is used as an absorbent oil binder. If compared to natural peat, the compost can be prepd. from universally available raw materials, has low vol.wt. and is easily transported. The oil-saturated compost can be burnt directly or as briquettes. The oil is degraded by the microorganisms. The oil smell is absorbed, esp. by the aromatic carbon cpd.-degrading microorganisms.
