The spring-operated brake is released mechanically, hydraulically, pneumatically, magnetically and/or electrically (e.g. hydraulic cylinder actuator) and comprises a brake shoe coupled to the spring via a linkage. The spring characteristic and the geometry of the linkage are such that the brake force is unaffected by brake shoe wear. The spring may have a non-linear characteristic whilst the linkage comprises a main actuating member connected, via spreader arms, to one end of double ended levers. The other end carries a brake shoe, the angle between member and each arm being less than 90 deg.
