Air-cored reactor with cylindrical winding - supported on cage structure carried on end-plates

The support for the reactor winding is provided by an assembly of axial bars (2) which are keyed into a disc (3) at each end. For windings with a large axial length intermediate supporting plates (7) may be added part way along the bars to improve dimensional stability. Spacers (5) forming distance pieces to locate and give separation between adjacent winding discs are keyed (6) to the radially outer face of each support bar (2). The arrangement eliminates the need for a solid cylindrical tube as a winding support. With the elimination of the tube, oil can circulate much more freely round the winding giving more intensive cooling. The end (3) and intermediate discs (7) may have locations (4) for the spindle of coil winding machine.
