The anti-theft system uses an electrical or electronic evaluation device, which is coupled to a signal contact (25, 26) attached to each item via a respective conductor flex (23, 24). Each of several adjacent signal contacts (25, 26) has a respective switch, enclosed by a locked casing (19), which can be operated by insertion of a key (29) to prevent the alarm being triggered when the signal contact (25, 26) is removed from the protected item. The signal contacts (25, 26) may comprise clamp clips gripping a fold of a respective garment on a hanging rail with the switches enclosed within the rail itself. All the contacts (25, 26) may be connected in series in a common monitoring circuit.
