Rolling down bars by means of conical rollers - which have circumferential longitudinal ridges to prevent slip

The dia of a round bar is reduced by passing the heated bar between a group of conical rollers with their axes symmetrically inclined to the bar axis. The rollers are driven through a system of sun and planet gears. To prevent any slip between the rollers and bar circumferential ridges are formed on the conical surfaces together with a number of longitudinal ridges in the region where the bar is first engaged by the rollers. The region near the cone apex is left smooth to give a good finish to the bar.
