Gas mixts. contg. H2, CH4, CO and CO2, esp. purified coke oven gas, are converted to H2 and CH4 by methanisation followed by cryogenic sepn. CO and CO2 are completely removed by methanisation with use of alkali or liq. N2 washing. A higher partial pressure of CH4 is adhered which raises its condensn. temp. during sepn. and vol. of gas in the cryogenic plant is reduced by about 30%, giving a more economic process than direct cryogenic sepn. of coke oven gas. Used in prodn. of H2 and CH4 for synthesis or use as fuel.
