Metal coatings which have been deposited by electroplating or chemically are tested for ductility by subjecting the coated workpiece to a torsional stress. A rod or tube which carries the coating on its outside together with a longitudinal control line is welded at one end to a flange with two bores by which it can be located through two pins on a base. The other end is welded to a crossbar so that it can be twisted through a certain angle. A disc, connected to the base, has a circle of holes so that pin through a hole in the handle can be used to lock the test piece in torsion so that its surface can be inspected for defects. This is a simple device which can be home-made and furnishes reliable results.
