20-Deoxynarasin of formula (I), and 20-doxy-epi-17-narasin, and their salts are new. The cpds. are useful as antibacterials effective against anaerobic strains and against Mycoplasma spp.; antivirals esp. active against rhinovirus type 3, vaccinia virus, herpes virus and influenza A virus; anticoccidials active against Eimeria tenella; and for improving feed utilisation by animals esp. ruminants. Also potentially effective against swine dysentery, as cardiotonic agents, as inhibitors of AtPase and as ionophores for selective removal of a cation from a medium, esp. Ag ions from photographic solns. and toxic cations from industrial wastes, or as components of a membrane useful for selective transport of cations against a concn. gradient. (I) and (II) are found in the antibiotic complex produced by cultivating Streptomyces aureofaciens Suggar NRRL 11181. Other factors are also formed, esp. narasin, adn these are sepd. by solvent extraction, chromatography etc.
