The resuce cabin for the crew of a sinking ship is integrated as part of the ship's superstructure, with a release mechanism allowing it to be jettisoned upon the ship sinking. The cabin is designed to float and incorporates distress call appts e.g a radio and emergency rations. It allows the crew to be rescued even in the case where the ship sinks very rapidly. The cabin may also incorporate a magnetic tape recorder, to allow a verbal ship's log to be kept, the tape recorder being contained in a water-tight floating casing and being detachable from the cabin.
