The rotary piston engine is esp. intended for running on heavy oil. It comprises two identical main rotors (2) (in housings 11) on a common shaft (1) each having a peripheral recess extending over 180 deg. of its circumference and offset by 180 deg. relative to the other. Each rotor is provided with a rotary valve (3) rolling on the periphery of its main rotor and held into contact by springs (4). Inlet is via a port (7) to one main rotor which compresses the charge and moves it to the second main rotor via an overflow duct (8). After ignition and expansion combustion gases are exhausted via a port (7a).
