The system detects leaks in ground laid water pipes. The process involves recording the pipe pressure over a long period with the pipe (1) isolated from the normal supply and connected via a measurement pipe (10, 11, 24) with measurement elements to a supply. This enables leaks to be found without necessitating long-term interruption of supply to consumers. The pipe is blocked off and bypassed and supplied in isolation at a raised water pressure. If the water consumption in the isolated pipe does not reach a zero over a long period then a leak is indicated. Before the measurement device is switched on pressure varying elements are connected in the measurement pipe. Flow noise variations at the blocking discs caused by leaks in the pipe are measured to indicate the leak(s) positions.
