Flow goes both in and out of the measurement probe (1). The static pressures on the inside of the probe and on the outside of the probe are both monitored and connected to a pressure balance (8). When the flow velocity increases in one direction or the other, the pressure inside the probe increases or decreases. This unbalance is used to operate a regulator (5) which diverts the flow via the sample chamber (4). The weight of the sample in the chamber is measured and the displacement of the pressure balance may be measured photo-electrically. These factors can also be used to control the sampling.
