Carbon 14 determination using paper capsule - having mainly cellulose content reinforced with 5-30 per cent quartz fibres

Capsules formed likes small hats are used to burn samples in O2 for subsequent determination of C-14 content. The capsule is primarily cellulose but also contains 5 to 50% by wt. of quarz fibres pref. 10 to 30%. The capsule is made by drying an aq. slurry of cellulose fibres into which are mixed the proportion of quarz fibres. Used for the determination of C-14 of various sample by the combustion technique. The construction improves the stability of the capsules preventing premature collapse with incomplete combustion of the sample.
