Para-tert. amyl-phenol (I), hydrogenation to p-tert. amyl cyclohexanone (II) using a Pd/C catalyst, place in the presence of Na2CO3, borax and/or AcONa as activator(s). Pref. Na concn. is 0.001-10 wt.% w.r.t. (I). Hydrogenation takes place at 120-250 degrees C under 1-20 bar pressure, using a Pd/C catalyst having metal surface =15m2/g. and specific surface 800m2/g. Solvents are opt. High conversion of (I), e.g. =98 wt.%, and selectivity, e.g. (II)-yields 90 wt.% can be achieved more quickly.
