The machine turns square shaped objects especially books or book blocks where the objects are continuously transported in a row in the same position. To produce an interval between successive objects they are for a short period conveyed at a higher speed before the lifting process and the objects are subsequently lifted separately and vertically either upwards or downwards. During the lifting movement the objects are also turned round a vertical axis. The turning process is carried out in steps or stages on a plate with a turntable bearing which is turned by a guide rail system during lifting or lowering.
